A case study on Scott Penfold, Planning Officer at Harley Global in Albany

At 17, Scott was a teenager searching for direction in his life. That soon changed however, after spending time on Work Experience with Rod Hedderwick and the team in Albany in 2004. In Scott's words "my career path was decided: I was going to become a Town Planner".

"After graduating from Albany Senior High School, I maintained a regular schedule of employment with Harley Global during my holidays from Curtin University, where I had begun a four year course studying Town Planning" says Scott. After showing great promise and enthusiasm for his work, Harley Global offered Scott a scholarship, which provided financial support for necessary items to maintain his study (travel, accommodation, books etc.), in exchange for his commitment to employment with the company.

Scott gladly accepted the offer; "I took on the challenge of committing half of the week to my studies, and the other half to hands-on training with the Senior Planning Consultants in Albany".

Scott currently assists Senior Planning Consultant, Roy Winslow, and the team on a variety of tasks, and has excelled in all areas. He is now taking on senior responsibilities such as preparing subdivision proposals, scheme amendments, and assisting with structure plans. "The group of people at the office in Albany are a brilliant team who are always there to support me" states Scott. "Securing a job in my second year at University, meant I could back my theoretical studies up with practical examples. I could relate the things I was learning to real life situations. To students in practical fields such as Town Planning, it is really important to have this balance."

Scott is pleased that his scholarship agreement with Harley Global allows him to maintain the lifestyle he enjoys in Albany, including being close to his friends and family. "Financially, I couldn't possibly commute back and forth from Perth every week" Scott comments, "but in using my financial incentive to subsidise my travel, Harley Global have allowed me to maintain my current lifestyle here
in Albany".

Scott happily comments on his experience thus far; "I really enjoy working at Harley Global. Their equipment and systems are state-of-the-art, and their staff really know what they're doing. I get to work with such a diverse range of clients, doing my dream job, without having to leave my home town. What more could you want!"

As part of a growing company, Scott enjoys the challenges each new day brings, and especially looks forward to the end of 2008, when his studies will be complete and he can really sink his teeth into his career as a Town Planner.
