Scholarship Student Based in Albany
Putting Theory into Practice
A case study on Tom Anderson, scholarship student
based in Albany
After graduating from high school in 2006, Tom had decided on his career in the Surveying Industry by enrolling in a Bachelor of Surveying at Curtin University. After completing a semester of his studies, Tom felt the urge to see what the surveying industry was really like by gaining some hands-on experience in his university holidays.
"As my family farm is based in Broome Hill, I thought Albany would be an ideal base to find some part-time work. Although I approached a number of different companies, it was the familiar Harley Global ‘dots' on a work vehicle on the side of the road where is where I found Chris Fry, Senior Engineering Surveyor, hard at work. I spoke to Chris about my intentions" says Tom. "Chris then took it to the Directors, who embraced the idea of helping a student develop his learning and enhance his studies."
Tom worked with the Harley Global team during his University holidays, and showed great initiative and enthusiasm for his work. The Group then rewarded Tom for his dedication by offering him one of their scholarship agreements, whereby they provide a financial incentive for Tom to use on travel, accommodation or books, in exchange for his employment in semester breaks and full time employment
upon graduation.
Tom was thrilled to have a place to see surveying in action and learn from people who really know their stuff. He speaks very highly of his colleagues at Harley Global, who he describes as ‘really supportive and helpful'. He has worked closely with Chris, Matt, Anthony and Aarron in the field and in the office, assisting with general field hand work, feature surveys, and other important tasks. "They are now giving me more tasks to do on my own, which means I can really put theory into practice" says Tom.
Working in Albany in his holidays has also allowed Tom to stay close to his friends and family based in Broome Hill, instead of having to re-locate to Perth. Tom enjoys the regional lifestyle, and Harley Global's unique opportunity has allowed him to maintain his interest in the area. Tom graduates from University at the end of 2009, and is very enthusiastic about his future in the industry.
